Embarking on the journey of fertility treatment can be a daunting and complex experience, with numerous aspects to consider. Get an overview of what to expect on this page.
Reasons for difficulties conceiving
There exist several factors contributing to difficulties in conceiving for couples. In many cases, it can be a matter of patience, as some couples may require more time to achieve pregnancy. Additionally, lifestyle improvements such as maintaining a healthy weight and quitting smoking can significantly enhance fertility. It's important to note that the majority of couples typically achieve natural conception within a two-year timeframe.
Some couples will face medical challenges preventing natural conception, several potential causes can be identified. These factors encompass ovulation disorders, infections, low sperm counts, as well as specific medications and treatments that can have adverse effects on fertility.
Getting medical help
1. Fertility drugs:
Fertility drugs can offer a viable solution for individuals with mild ovulation issues, potentially enabling pregnancy through medication alone.
2. Intrauterine insemination (IUI):
IUI involves placing carefully prepared sperm directly into the uterus during the woman's ovulation period. While they are less invasive than IVF, it's essential to note that they also tend to have a lower success rate
3. In vitro fertilization (IVF):
IVF offers your doctor precise control over the conception and fertilization process, making it one of the most effective treatments available for certain individuals.
4. IVF options:
IVF offers flexibility with various approaches, some of which require fewer or no fertility drugs. These alternatives encompass natural IVF, mild stimulation IVF, and in vitro maturation (IVM).
5. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI):
Approximately half of couples encountering difficulties in conceiving face issues related to sperm, which can be a significant factor in infertility. In such cases, ICSI is the most prevalent and effective treatment for addressing male infertility.
6. Using a donor:
If you are unable to use your own eggs or sperm, whether individually or both, the necessity arises to consider a donor.
7. Surgery for infertility:
Surgical interventions are used to treat anatomical abnormalities or conditions that hinder fertility in men and women.
8. Surrogacy:
In cases of recurrent pregnancy losses, many unsuccessful IVF attempts, or the presence of an absent or malformed womb, the consideration of surrogacy may become necessary. However there are strict laws around this in most countries and it’s imperative to find a reputable clinic / agency.
